As Parents share the best of goods, clothing, shelter, and love with their newborn child, so they also should share the best of their faith and values. (Diocese of Honolulu B-1)
In having your infant child baptized, you are saying to God that you want your child to be apart of the body of Christ, a member of the Christian community. You are also affirming your commitment to raise your baby as a child of the light. The community of believers affirms its commitment to support you and your child through prayer and example.
Parents should see to it that their children are baptized within a reasonable period after birth. Arrangements for baptism should be made as soon as possible after birth, or even before birth. Once children have reached the age of reason (7 years old), they would enter the process called Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) for children. The RCIA describes a process in which children are guided and cared for as they awaken in faith and are gradually introduced to the catholic way of life. This process usually lasts one year and a half.
Photographs and video are encouraged at the baptism ceremony. These are excellent means of sharing the memory of this joyous and special day with your child as he or she grows in age and faith. They will also turn out to be a good teaching tool. Please be sure to follow the instructions of the celebrant to insure that you will be getting the best pictures while remaining reverent and not interfering with the ceremony. Father is always happy to stay for pictures with your family after the baptism.
Parents are encouraged to dress their child in white christening attire; however, it is not required. Whatever clothing is worn should be loose enough at the neck to allow anointing of the child’s breast. If a hat is worn, it should be removed for the baptism. The parish will provide a white stole and a baptismal candle. After the ceremony the will be yours to keep as a reminder of this joyous milestone. The candle can be burned on baptismal anniversaries and when the child receives other sacraments in the future.
The baptism will be recorded in the permanent records of the parish from the information you provide. Therefore please print and be sure of the accuracy of information and the spelling of names. A baptism certificate will be provided to you on the day of baptism. Later, whenever a certificate might be needed, it can be prepared from the parish record.
This program helps to lead young adults (high school age or older), to a closer relationship with Christ, so that they may become better disciples of the church and secular community. High School Confirmation is a two year process. Adults interested in the sacrament of confirmation are asked to contact the Religious Education Department directly.
This program prepares persons, age 7 and older to join the larger community to feast at the table of the lord. The program includes preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Those wishing to get married in the Church need to contact the church office at least six month prior to their anticipated wedding date. Couples are required to meet with the priest or deacon on a regular basis, participate in Engaged Encounter as required by the Diocese of Honolulu, and complete either a FOCCUS or PREPARE Couple Inventory. Couples anticipating Christian Marriage should contact the parish priest or deacon at least 6 months before the anticipated tentative date and are highly discouraged from making any formal or set wedding plans until after their first meeting with the priest or deacon. Contact the Parish office or refer to our services page for more information.
